Common Core Standards
AMI/USA and EAA partner in aligning the Montessori “curriculum” with Common Core State Standards.
The Common Core Standards—an educational hot topic—have now been adopted by more than 45 states. In support of, and service to our schools, we have partnered with EAA in a new initiative to map the AMI elementary curriculum to the Common Core Standards. The goal is to create a coordinated and comprehensive mapping that the AMI Scientific Pedagogical Group can endorse. The SPG has agreed to review our work with Annette Haines, Ed.D. acting as the AMI facilitator.
Once the AMI effort has been completed and approved, we will join forces with Anna Perry, executive director of the AMS-affiliated Seton Montessori Institute, to create a definitive document that will serve the entire Montessori community.
To gather people interested in working on the AMI portion of this project, EAA posted a message on the EAA, MAA, and NAMTA list serves. The response was terrific, and the CCSS Mapping Task Force was established with approximately 30 members. We are very pleased that Michel Capobianco has agreed to chair the task force, assisted by John Snyder and Virginia McHugh Goodwin. The interest expressed indicates that the work we are undertaking jointly is of urgent practical importance.
